Wilhelm Hack Museum
The Wilhelm Hack Museum on Berliner Straße is the foremost art museum in Rhineland-Palatinate and a highlight of central Ludwigshafen. Unmistakable even from the outside is the roughly 55-metre-wide ceramic wall mural by Joan Miró, which has adorned the façade in vivid colours and shapes since 1980. Inside, the collection ranges from medieval art through classical modernism, with works by Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian, to concrete and constructive art. Changing exhibitions, a children's museum and a lively education programme make the house a cultural focal point of the city.
History & significance
The museum goes back to the collecting passion of the Cologne benefactor Wilhelm Hack, whose holdings form its core. For a young industrial city like Ludwigshafen, the opening was a cultural statement: all at once the working-class city on the Rhine possessed the most important art museum in Rhineland-Palatinate. To this day the museum shapes the inner city's sense of itself as a place for serious art.
What to expect
Inside, the journey runs from medieval panels through Kandinsky, Klee and Mondrian to the concrete and constructive art of the post-war years. The collection is astonishingly varied for the size of the house and is complemented by ambitious changing exhibitions. A dedicated children's museum brings modern art within reach of the youngest visitors too and invites them to join in.
Tips for your visit
Even before you go in, it is worth looking up at Joan Miró's luminous ceramic wall, which hangs on the façade free for everyone to see. Inside the house, it is best to take your time over the education programme and the rotating special shows. The central location on Berliner Straße makes it easy to combine your visit with a stroll through the city centre.
