Rhine Promenade
The Rhine Promenade runs along the left bank of the Rhine in front of the city centre and is the central meeting place by the water. From here you look across the broad river to Mannheim — Ludwigshafen and its sister city are often called the "city of two banks". Passing freight ships, excursion steamers and the landing stages bring the lively character of the Rhine to life. As part of the redesign of the city centre and the demolition of the dilapidated Hochstraße Nord flyover, the promenade is set to be linked even more closely with the centre in the future.
Meeting place by the water
The promenade along the left bank of the Rhine is the central spot where Ludwigshafen brings the river to life. From the benches and paths you look straight across the broad river to Mannheim, which is why both cities like to call themselves the city of two banks. In fine weather the riverside path becomes a favourite destination for walkers, joggers and anyone wanting to escape the bustle of the city centre for a while.
What to expect
The charm lies in the lively goings-on out on the water: passing freight ships, excursion steamers and the landing stages make the Rhine's importance as a transport artery palpable. In the background the Mannheim skyline takes shape, and in the evening its lights are mirrored in the river. Here you quickly grasp why the river is so central to the city's identity.
A city in transition
The promenade sits at the heart of one of the biggest urban topics of all: with the demolition of the dilapidated Hochstraße Nord flyover and the redesign of the centre, the riverbank is set to be linked far more closely with the core in the future. Anyone strolling here today therefore experiences both a landmark and a place where the face of Ludwigshafen is being fundamentally reshaped.
