BASF drives the transformation to climate-friendly chemistry at its main site
At BASF's main site in Ludwigshafen, the largest integrated chemical complex in Europe, investment in low-carbon production and green hydrogen continues.
BASF has shaped Ludwigshafen since its founding — the main site on the northern edge of the city is the largest integrated chemical complex in Europe and by far the city's biggest employer. In 2026 the company is pushing ahead with the shift towards more climate-friendly production. The focus is on the use of green hydrogen, electrically powered processes and the gradual conversion of energy-intensive plants. At the same time the site is under economic pressure from high energy costs and international competition. The city and the state are accompanying the transition, which is of central importance for tens of thousands of jobs in Ludwigshafen and the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
